Since 1981 Amy S. Keefer and her husband, Jim, have
owned and operated Thornwood Farm, a full service
boarding, training, lesson, showing, breeding and sales
facility located in Western PA in northern Butler County.
- is a full service facility that offers boarding, lessons,
and training in a program customized specially for you and your horse. We
have a 60' by 120' indoor arena, a 70' by 140' outdoor ring and a 150' by 250'
outdoor jumping field. Six fields and paddocks allow for frequent turnout.
Miles of trails are available for hacking.
- Amy has been breaking and training young
hunters and jumpers, race horses, and horses of all breeds for a variety of
equine careers for over 35 years. In 1996 she received her certification
by the American Riding Instructors Association to teach Hunt Seat Equitation
from Beginner basics to Advanced horsemanship. She also teaches and
coaches two Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association teams - Slippery Rock
University at the Storm Harbor Equestrian Center at SRU and Clarion University
at Thornwood Farm. As an active member of the Western PA Professional
Horsemens' Association for many years, Amy has served on the board of
directors in many capacities, including as manager of the annual USEF
sanctioned WPAPHA horse show. Amy is also a recorded USEF judge with an
'r' rating in Hunters and Hunt Seat Equitation and a 'R' in Hunter Breeding.
- Thornwood Farm students and horses compete at USEF
recognized shows on the WPAPHA circuit and at local Mountaineer
Hunter/Jumper affiliated shows, and have earned many championships
and year- end awards.
- Although we specialize in hunters and hunt seat equitation, all
aspiring horse-persons are welcomed here to pursue their goals in whatever
discipline interests them. Amy Keefer teaches a balanced, independent seat that
is adaptable to any riding endeavor. All levels and ages of riders are welcome,
from beginners to advanced, from 6 yrs old to 60+. Horsemanship at any age is
good for your physical and mental well-being.
- Thornwood Farm also offers rehabilitation services for
horses that need customized care due to traumatic injury or experience. Ex-
racehorses, and/or horses that just need some down time from competition are
put on an individualized program that will accommodate their special needs and
bring them back to optimum health and rideability. We combine classic methods
of care with the latest holistic techniques, such as acupuncture and
chiropractic/massage. Our exclusively equine veterinarian service is regularly
scheduled for routine care and also on call 24-7 to immediately take care of any
emergency that may arise.
- Thornwood Farm can help you take advantage of the PA Breeders
Awards program by boarding and foaling your Thoroughbred mares and raising
your foals for you. We foal sporthorse mares also, and can help you plan your
mating, raise your foal, and train it and/or you to handle/show it. We also stand at
stud the great National Champion Andalusian stallion 'Cresswood Gitano Rey',
owned by Lois Hamilton of Grove City, PA. Rey has a wonderful disposition and
the conformation and athletic ability to improve any mare if you want a top quality
sporthorse foal.
